Anna Loewendahl - Performance Maker

Theatre Director-Writer/Artistic Direction/Animateur/Performer

Anna Loewendahl
makes performance
. She's a Director-Writer, Animatuer and performer. If there is a human being in a space with Anna, for the purpose of making performance, she is in her element. She is a human being too - committed to a lifetime’s performance practice that refuses to be defined. Her work reflects multiple views of the world and uses varied forms and mediums. Anna reaches out towards other artists and non-artists who seek positive social change or create whimsical humour on bleak days or make works of wonder about this thing called Life. Her work is pioneering – in a quiet yet rippling fashion.

The artist called Anna Loewendahl is a global Performance Maker, based in Melbourne, Australia.  Australia has been her inspiring home for ten years. Her own performance questions have taken her to people, places and ways of making performance from Kathakali in India, to Mask-making in Mexico, to Sufi Dancing in Natimuk.  Each project has cultivated Anna’s performance making process. Her directing style is distinct. She is an animateur who facilitates professionals and non-professionals to create drama. She is a professional Director-Writer. She scores work, much as she does as a choreographer, on the floor in the rehearsal room. The rehearsal room is her favourite place.

Anna is an enabler of performance making, building new projects with communities, professional companies, individual artists and festivals. She endeavours to make performance happen with veracity, with respect to the process and the people it carries and to the quality of the final works.

Every audience Anna has experienced, from Zimbabwe to New Zealand, has affirmed her rationale for continuing the hard graft of making performance happen. Performance is needed. Regardless of size, fame, or budget. It can be a tiny theatre show, on the side of a dirt road to an audience of two but it is no less of a show than any other. People need to see people performing to see. It is both a balm and a sting.
